These activities are great options during weather delays and rest days. Juneau is known for its outstanding variety of things to do, and with Glacier Bay National Park, Tracy Arm Wilderness, Admiralty Island National Monument, and the Juneau Icefield nearby, we offer all the experiences for which Alaska is legendary. We have the outdoor gear and equipment to tackle any adventure around the area.
The Rock Dump Climbing Gym is Alaska’s largest indoor climbing facility, and located 15-minutes from the heliport, 20-minutes from Eaglecrest, and a short 5-minute walk to the Mount Roberts Tram in the heart of downtown Juneau. Our guided ice climbing trips are permitted on the Mendenhall Glacier, and access is gained by van drop-off and a short trail hike.
Trail Hiking & Glacier Trekking
There are more than 100-miles of trails around Juneau which provide a window into the rugged rainforest of Southeast Alaska. Guide booklets are available for our local trails, or hire us for a trek atop the Mendenhall Glacier.
Salmon, trout, halibut & crab are the seafood of choice during spring months. Guided sport-fishing is available in our boat the “Glacier Soul”. Fly-fishing can be achieved along the beach shores near freshwater streams, and sea kayaking near the coastlines.
Humpback whales abound in Southeast, Dall porpoises dart and chase along side boats for fun, harbor seals & Stelllar sea lions frequent rock beaches and buoys. Killer whale (Orca), Pacific dolphin, and Minke whales are rare treats. River and sea otters, Sitka black-tail deer, bald-eagle, and brown bear may be seen along the shorelines of Admiralty Island.
Gear is available for rent through UAS, Foggy Mountain Shop, and Eaglecrest Ski Area. Eaglecrest has upper & lower track-set loops, and Spaulding Meadows is a scenic destination with views of the Chilkat Range, Coast Mountains, and surrounding waterways.
The Mendenhall River is a good location for cold, whitewater kayaking with scenic views of the glacier. There are numerous launch locations for sea kayaking along Juneau’s coastline, and at Auke & Mendenhall Lake. Guided trips and rental gear is available.
The pool is Olympic size with two diving boards, exercise equipment, and a very nice sauna. It’s about a 5-minute walk from the Driftwood Lodge, or 10-minute walk from Capital Inn. We recommend utilizing the facility before or after a day of skiing . It’s open early, and closes late.
All kinds of hokey leagues exist so it’s sometimes difficult to get ice-time. There are at least a couple of public sessions offered each day. The rink is located at Sandy Beach on Douglas Island with regular bus service from downtown.
The bowling alley is located across the street from the Driftwood Lodge. It has a bar and limited food service along with 10-lanes.
Located near the Mendenhall Glacier about 20-minutes from downtown by van. The archery and rife range is an activity that your guide might pitch to wake-up the group.
