Kevin Krein

Co-owner and Lead Guide

Dr. Kevin Krein is a lifelong Alaskan and has been skiing since before he can remember. He made his first ski mountaineering trip to the Alaska Range in 1997. In 2000, he climbed, then skied, from the summit of Denali (20,320 ft.). He has been guiding and teaching outdoor courses in the Juneau area for the past eight years. He regularly guides glacier and kayak trips in the summer months and during the past two years he was lead guide on Juneau Icefield film shoots for The Discovery Channel and the BBC.



In addition to guiding in the Juneau area, Kevin has been employed at the University of Alaska since 1999. From 2001-2007 he served as Director of the university’s Outdoor Studies program. Kevin has taught courses in all aspects of outdoor recreation including his favorite, Backcountry Skiing and Snowboarding. As an instructor, Kevin has taken students on a winter ski traverses of the Juneau Icefield, to climb and ski Mt. Bona (16,421 ft.) in the St. Elias Mountains, and to climb Mt. Sanford (16,327 ft.) in the Wrangell Mountains.

While he loves guiding, and skiing in the mountains, Kevin also holds a Ph.D in philosophy, teaches philosophy courses, and publishes in the field of philosophy of sport. Courses he has recently taught include Philosophy of Sport, Mountain Travel: Philosophy, Literature, and Practice, Philosophy of Mountaineering, Eastern Philosophy, and Existentialism.

While much of Kevin’s time is taken up guiding and philosophizing about guiding, he also enjoys completing trips on his own. Highlights of the last few years include climbing Aconcagua (22,841ft) in 2003, completing two separate rock routes on the Mendenhall Towers in 2004 and 2005, and participating in ski trips to Japan and surf trips to Mexico and Costa Rica in 2006 and 2007.
