Mark “Cedar” Dumont

Co-owner and Lead Guide

Cedar was born in a blizzard and grew up climbing and skiing in the Pacific Northwest. Cedar migrated north and now has now been guiding in Alaska for more than a decade with a proven safety record. He was a professional alpine and telemark ski patroller for eight years, five of which were at the “snowboard capital of the world” in Brighton, Utah. In addition to his normal ski patrol duties, Cedar was a control route leader, performed backcountry and high-angle rescues, and worked the extreme competitions.

During spring and summer time in Alaska, Cedar worked as Senior Guide/Program Director for a Haines, Alaska based climb/ski guide service. Along with guiding the big mountains and ski plane assisted glacier skiing, Cedar also developed curricula, training manuals, and conducted guide training for the company. Over the years, Cedar has worked with film crews, magazines, and travel writers, as well as training Elite U.S. Special Forces in skiing & climbing. In 2001, Cedar was awarded one of the highest honors from the National Ski Patrol, the “Blue Merit Star”.

In his free time, Cedar enjoys whitewater paddling and has multiple river and steep creek first descents in Southeast Alaska. He has also worked as a whitewater safety boater in Alaska and the Yukon. Cedar was the expedition leader/safety boater for the successful first descent of the Faragutt River for the Discovery Channel’s “Expedition Alaska” show aired in 2007. Any other spare time he has is spent in his semi-remote, off-the-grid cabin on Douglas Island.
